Description

About AIYS:

The American Institute for Yemeni Studies (AIYS) was founded in 1978 to promote research on Yemen, preserve Yemeni heritage, and promote research and scholarly exchange between academics in the United States and Yemen. AIYS takes on varied projects within Yemen such as restoration, preservation, and architectural reconstruction and documentation as well as fellowship programs. AIYS annually holds two competitions for fellowship programs supporting research on Yemen, one for U.S. citizens and one for citizens of the Republic of Yemen (more information on the Yemeni fellowship can be found at aiys.org).

Guidelines:

The AIYS U.S. Scholars Fellowship is currently accepting applications! The fellowship is open to United States citizens who are either current graduate students or post graduate scholars. Team submissions are also welcome, though all team members must meet the eligibility criteria. This fellowship enables scholars to travel and complete research on Yemen in any academic discipline - meaning that the sky's the limit with this fellowship. Travel must be carried out outside of the U.S. and Yemen. For example, previous fellows have carried out research in Lebanon at the Jafet Library (Special Collections) at the American University of Beirut and in the Netherlands at the Leiden Collection of Ancient South Arabian Stick Inscriptions at Leiden University.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Must be a full-time graduate student or a postgraduate professional (group projects are permitted)

  • Must complete your research in a country outside of the U.S. and Yemen

Approximately 1-2 awards of up to $5,000.00 each will be awarded.

Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Deadline: February 21st, 2024 at 5:00PM EST

Recommendation Letter Deadline:  February 23rd, 2024 at 5:00PM EST
