ARCE recognizes there are many barriers that face students in the field of Egyptology. As an organization that hosts, arguably, the most significant Egyptology academic conference in the United States, we recognize our responsibility in creating pathways for students, especially those with financial need, to access the annual meeting, and in doing so, hopefully the field as well. In recognition of this duty, ARCE is dedicated to offering a maximum of five (5) grants each year. Total grants awarded, however, may vary dependent on available funds achieved through fundraising (https://arce.org/donate). Additionally, ARCE is dedicated to providing mentorship opportunities for grantees at the AM in the hopes that the stressors of attendance might be eased.
The American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) Student Access Grant (SAG) provides support for students to attend the in-person Annual Meeting (AM), with the ultimate goal being the creation of additional pathways to participation in the AM and, consequently, within the field of Egyptology. The grant will cover a student’s hotel room for a maximum 4 nights, meeting registration, and up to $500 in travel.
Eligibility Applicants must meet the following criteria:
The Student Access Grant may be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, and those who have graduated within the past year (12 months) of the Annual Meeting start date for whom attendance would not be possible without financial support.
The Student Access Grant will prioritize four key considerations:
- First time ARCE in-person Annual Meeting attendees and first-time presenters,
- Those early in their student career or at a major transitional moment, such as applying for graduate school or Egyptology-related jobs,
- Applicants who have not been awarded the grant previously,
- Egyptology-driven educational or career goals.
Application Deadline: December 13, 2024 11:59 PM EST.
Application Requirements: Applicants will need to fill out this application here (click on green apply button in the upper right corner). Applicants will also need to arrange for a letter of recommendation to be submitted either through the application portal or via email to arcefellows@arce.org by December 13th, 2024.
A letter of recommendation, ideally on letter head that is signed, should be submitted on the student’s behalf by a member of their current, or most recent, academic institution by the application deadline. The letter shall confirm the student’s full-time, current status, or recent full-time student status within the past 12 months. Letter should further speak to the student’s work or interest in Egyptology and the impact of their attendance at the AM to their educational and career goals, as they relate to Egypt. Letters should ideally be titled “Student Last Name_Rec_SAG20##”.
Post-Meeting Requirement: Within 10 days after attending the Annual Meeting, awardees must submit a brief report describing how you benefited from your attendance. Awardees may be asked to comment about their experience for ARCE's use on social media platforms. Please send it Ms. Nesma Attiatalla on: arcefellows@arce.org
