The AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF INDIAN STUDIES (AIIS) is a non-profit consortium of ninety-one American colleges and universities that supports the advancement of knowledge and understanding of India, its people, and culture. The AIIS Junior Fellowship provides $7000 in funding and administrative support for advanced doctoral students pursuing fieldwork in India associated with their dissertation project.
AIIS welcomes applicants from a wide variety of disciplines. In addition to applicants in the Humanities and Social Sciences AIIS encourages applicants in fields such as Development Studies, Natural Resources Management, Public Health, and Regional Planning. AIIS accepts applications from doctoral students pursuing a doctorate from any U.S. institution. Non-U.S. citizens who are studying at a U.S. institution are welcome to apply.
The selection committee will assess each application on the following basis:
- Excellence and merit of the project
- Relationship to existing scholarship
- Project design and methodology
- The candidate’s academic and/or professional record
Members of the Selection Committee represent a number of different academic disciplines within the field of Indian Studies, so the applicant must explain the nature and significance of the project in terms intelligible to a non-specialist audience. Please avoid jargon and be as concise as possible. Applicants who are not affiliated with an AIIS member institution are welcome to apply.
Please note: AIIS welcomes re-submissions. Many fellows achieved success only after one or two applications had been denied. Please plan accordingly.
