Opens Sep 22 2026 10:00 AM (EDT)
Deadline Nov 19 2026 11:59 PM (EST)
Description

The AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF INDIAN STUDIES (AIIS) is a non-profit consortium of ninety-one American colleges and universities that supports the advancement of knowledge and understanding of India, its people, and culture. The AIIS NEH Senior Research Fellowship provides a roundtrip ticket to India and $5000 per month spent in India in funding and administrative support for Senior Scholars pursuing fieldwork in India associated with a well-developed, new research project in a humanities or humanistic social science.

AIIS welcomes applicants from a wide variety of disciplines. AIIS accepts applications from any person with a terminal degree with an affiliation at a US institution. The selection committee will assess each application on the following basis:

  • Excellence and merit of the project
  • Relationship to existing scholarship
  • Project design and methodology
  • The candidate’s academic and/or professional record

Members of the Selection Committee represent a number of different academic disciplines within the field of Indian Studies, so the applicant must explain the nature and significance of the project in terms intelligible to a non-specialist audience. Please avoid jargon and be as concise as possible. Applicants who are not affiliated with an AIIS member institution are welcome to apply.

Please note: AIIS welcomes re-submissions. Many fellows achieved success only after one or two applications had been denied. Please plan accordingly.
