Description

About the Award

CAORC recognizes the immediate and growing need for professors at U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions to provide a global perspective to their students. These administrators and faculty understand the value of developing internationalized learning environments that both broaden their students’ cultural horizons and foster critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills for an increasingly interconnected world.

To support community colleges and minority-serving institutions, the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) offers fully-funded overseas seminars that help faculty and administrators gain the requisite first-hand experience needed to develop and improve international courses, curricula, and teaching materials. Funding for this program is provided to CAORC through a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The two-week-long seminar is currently scheduled for July 11 - 25, 2025*.

*Note: Dates listed are tentative program dates, and are not inclusive of travel. Dates may be adjusted slightly due to flight availability.

Seminar Overview

This seminar, administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) in collaboration with its member center in Indonesia, the American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS),  this seminar aims to provide faculty members with insights and firsthand experiences that can enrich their teaching and research, enhancing participants' knowledge of Indonesia's diverse society. This overview will be updated with a detailed description of locations and activities highlighting key elements of the program, including field visits, academic lectures, community engagement, and opportunities for future collaborative research. Please return to this page for detailed updates on locations and activities.

Eligibility

The program is open to full-time or part-time faculty and administrators at U.S. community colleges or minority-serving institutions. A directory of MSIs can be found at the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. The program is open to faculty in all fields, at all academic ranks, and from any academic or administrative department.

CAORC and the U.S. Department of State do not require any vaccinations to participate in the Overseas Faculty Development Seminar program, however the host countries, overseas research centers, individual sites, and communities that are part of the OFDS program schedule may have their own requirements for vaccination. These requirements may change from the time of application to the time of travel.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application and must hold a valid, current U.S. passport that does not expire within six months of the late date of the program.

CAORC offers multiple concurrent seminar opportunities. Applicants are only allowed to apply to one of these seminars per cycle. Submitting applications to more than one seminar running at the same time will render all applications ineligible.

Previously awarded CAORC seminar participants must wait at least one year before applying again, and 18 months before participating in a second seminar. For example, an awardee who attended a seminar in Summer 2024 would not be eligible to participate in a second seminar until January of 2026.

Program Expectations

As an outcome of the Overseas Faculty Development Seminar program, participants are required to develop and implement a Project to increase internationalization on their campus. Details and examples of these projects will be shared with awardees during pre-departure orientation. Projects should be implemented within one year of the conclusion of the program, at which time participants will be asked to submit a project report and share curriculum and/or documentation of the project for inclusion on CAORC's Open Educational Resources site.

The application deadline for this seminar is December 2, 2025 at 5:00pm EST. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted for review.
