About the Seminar

We are excited to announce an opportunity for investigators to participate in an Overseas Faculty Development Seminar (OFDS) in India, organized through The 1890 Center for Excellence for Natural Resources, Renewable Energy, and Environment (COE-NREE): A Climate Smart Approach.

The program is open to faculty of the institutional members of The 1890 Center of Excellence for Natural Resources, Renewable Energy, and the Environment:

  • Tennessee State University
  • Alabama A&M University
  • Southern University
  • Florida A&M University
  • Langston University
  • North Carolina A&T University
  • University of Maryland at Eastern Shore
  • Fort Valley State University
  • Lincoln University

As part of our commitment to Thrust 4: Workforce Training and Development, specifically focusing on Global Engagement, the seminar aims to address the increasing need for agricultural and environmental sciences faculty to gain a broader understanding of the global implications and interactions of agricultural and natural systems. Despite the growing emphasis on study abroad experiences, only a small percentage of agriculture- and environmental science-based students currently benefit from these programs. In collaboration with the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) we have developed this unique opportunity to focus on climate change, providing faculty members with the tools to internationalize learning environments and enhance students' cultural horizons.

The OFDS award for this program supports participation in a two-week seminar that includes travel to the Indian cities of Delhi, Dehradun, and Coimbatore, with additional visits to Ooty and Agra. The program focuses on exploring contemporary challenges and opportunities in India's forestry and agriculture sectors. Participants will examine the overlapping and cross-cutting issues arising from India’s rapid development. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate with university faculty and NGO researchers through specialist-led site visits and cultural excursions, gaining insight into India’s rich history, culture, languages, religions, and contemporary society—all of which can inform efforts to address agricultural and sustainability challenges.

Key Seminar Details:

Duration: 14 days (12 days in-country + travel)
Dates: May 11-14, 2025

Focus: Climate Change, Natural Resources, Forestry, and the Environment
Partner Institutions: American Institute for Indian Studies

Objectives of the Seminar:

  • Encourage collaborative research between US-based and Indian researchers.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange through lectures, colloquia, seminars, and workshops.
  • Provide access to research facilities and create a transnational community of scholars.

Thank you for considering this unique faculty development initiative. We look forward to your participation and its positive impact on globalizing our institutions’ educational experiences.

The application deadline for this seminar is February 1, 2025 at 11:59 PM EST.
